Startup funding survey tools and research methods
Startup funding survey tools sit alongside interviews, analytics and UK records. Compare what each method shows, its limits and privacy safeguards.
What to take away
- Surveys, interviews, analytics and administrative data each answer a different funding question. Match the tool to the question, not the other way around.
- Surveys estimate within a sample. Interviews explore how a decision unfolded. Analytics and administrative records show recorded behaviour.
- No single method explains the whole audience alone.
- SmartSurvey or Qualtrics suit surveys; Dovetail or NVivo suit interviews. Matomo or Google Analytics 4 suit analytics; Power BI or R suit administrative data.
- Test tools with dummy data. Score required features separately from preferences.
- Document governance before recruitment, including lawful basis and retention.
- Revisit your tool comparison when product terms change.

Survey platforms
SmartSurvey is a UK platform with UK data storage options; paid plans typically start under £30 per month. Qualtrics offers advanced question logic, quotas and GDPR tools, with quote-based pricing. Jisc Online Surveys is free for UK further and higher education and research, and remains simple to use.

- Limited logic
SurveyMonkey has a free tier and paid plans typically from about £25 per month. Google Forms and Microsoft Forms are free with an account, but offer limited logic and data residency controls. For low-risk, non-sensitive work they can be enough.
Compare products on accessibility, question logic and export formats. Then check respondent authentication, deletion, storage location, sub-processors and contract terms. Price alone does not answer whether a tool suits personal or commercially sensitive information.
Run a short test on the devices and assistive technologies participants use. Export data before launch. Check whether missing, partial and duplicate responses are identifiable. Never assume an anonymous link produces anonymous data.
Interviews and moderated sessions
The GOV.UK Service Manual's research-planning guidance says method and participant numbers should follow the question. It describes small repeated qualitative rounds. Surveys and benchmarks may need hundreds of participants for clear findings.

Otter.ai, Rev, Dovetail

NVivo and MAXQDA
- Role

- Framework coding
- Cost

- Watch
- Learning curve
Zoom and Microsoft Teams support moderated sessions, waiting rooms and recording controls. Otter.ai, Rev and Dovetail can transcribe or store recordings. Those services may copy data to further suppliers. Check recording controls, access, retention and deletion.
Offer another route when recording is not necessary or a participant declines it. NVivo and MAXQDA can code transcripts against a framework, but they add licence costs and a learning curve. Dovetail and Condens keep clips, notes and themes in one repository.
Analytics and operating data
Create an event and field dictionary before analysis. For a funding service, “started” could mean viewed a funding page, created an account or opened an application. Changing the definition mid-series makes a trend unreliable.

Plausible and Fathom
- Cost

- Feature
- Cookie-free
- Setup
- Paid plan

- Limited replay
Google Analytics 4 is free and event-based, but needs consent mode and retention settings configured. Matomo is open source and can be self-hosted, or run on paid cloud. Plausible and Fathom offer cookie-free analytics on paid plans, typically from around £7 to £15 per month. Hotjar and Microsoft Clarity add session replay and heatmaps.
Administrative data may contain company and personal identifiers, rejected applications or confidential financial material. Limit access. Report aggregated findings where possible. Excel and Google Sheets suit small extracts. Power BI or Tableau support larger analysis. R or Python pandas support reproducible work, while SPSS and Stata fit survey or administrative models.
UK startup funding data sources
Companies House provides company filings and status information, but it is not a complete record of private funding rounds. Use filings to check company details and treat them as one source rather than a full account of investment.
Commercial funding databases include Beauhurst, Crunchbase, Dealroom, PitchBook and CB Insights. They can help identify reported rounds, but coverage and definitions vary, so cross-check records where possible and note which source and definition you used.
British Business Bank reports can inform research on the UK finance landscape. Innovate UK published award information can help identify grant-backed projects. SEIS and EIS are tax-relief schemes administered by HMRC; HMRC guidance explains their rules, but scheme information is not a complete record of startup investment.
Use surveys to gather founders' reported funding experiences and interviews to understand their decisions. Compare these accounts with administrative and commercial records where possible; a grant award, an equity round and a tax-relief claim are not interchangeable measures.
Select through a controlled trial
Write five or six representative tasks. Test shortlisted tools using dummy information. Check invitation delivery, keyboard use and save-and-return behaviour. Then test validation, export, deletion and the clarity of participant notices. Record the product version and test date because interfaces and terms change.
Score required features separately from preferences. A sophisticated dashboard is of little use if respondents cannot complete the survey or researchers cannot retrieve a clean audit trail. Confirm who will administer the system and how mistakes will be corrected before collecting live responses.
Privacy and governance
GOV.UK's participant privacy guide recommends collecting only necessary data, restricting access and setting retention. The ICO's research-processing guidance explains that every processing activity needs an appropriate lawful basis and current privacy information. Participation consent and a UK GDPR lawful basis are not interchangeable.
Document the controller, purpose, legal assessment and suppliers. Then list data fields, access, retention and deletion process before recruitment. Revisit the comparison when product terms change.
Before you act
- Define the research question before selecting a tool.
- Run a short test on devices and assistive technologies participants use.
- Create an event and field dictionary before analysis.
- Test shortlisted tools with dummy information and representative tasks.
- Document controller, purpose, suppliers, access and retention before recruitment.
- Confirm who will administer the system and correct mistakes.
Common questions
How do I choose between a survey and an interview for startup funding research?
The right tool depends on the question. A survey estimates responses within a defined sample. An interview explores how a funding decision unfolded. No single method explains the whole audience alone, so match the method to what you need to find out.
What should I check before using a survey platform for sensitive data?
Compare products on accessibility, question logic and export formats. Then check respondent authentication, deletion, storage location, sub-processors and contract terms. Price alone does not answer whether a tool suits personal or commercially sensitive information. Run a short test and never assume an anonymous link produces anonymous data.
What governance steps are needed before collecting research data?
Document the controller, purpose, legal assessment and suppliers. Then list data fields, access, retention and deletion process before recruitment. Participation consent and a UK GDPR lawful basis are not interchangeable. Collect only necessary data, restrict access and set retention.
